The Destination
Kerala's Best Kept Secret
A forest village where the Periyar River flows quietly through the Western Ghats, three sides surrounded by jungle, and the fourth by one of Kerala’s longest hanging bridges. Inchathotty isn’t on everyone’s map yet — and that’s exactly why it’s worth coming here.
The Place
A Village the Forest Kept
Inchathotty is a small forest village in Ernakulam District, Kerala, nestled at the foothills of the Western Ghats near Neriamangalam, the Gateway to the High Range. It sits on the Kochi–Madurai National Highway (NH 49), just 3.5 km from Neriamangalam and approximately 75 km from Ernakulam city.
What makes Inchathotty unlike most Kerala destinations is its geography: the village is enclosed by dense forest on three sides, and the mighty Periyar River forms its fourth boundary. This natural enclosure has kept the area largely untouched, no overcrowding, no tourist corridors, no noise. Just the forest, the river, and the hills.
It sits at the border of Ernakulam and Idukki districts, a rare convergence of two very different Kerala landscapes. The lowland greenery of Ernakulam meets the dramatic highlands of Idukki, creating a microclimate and biodiversity that is uniquely rich.

The Periyar River
Kerala's Lifeline, Right Here
The Periyar is Kerala’s longest river — 244 km of water that flows from the Sivagiri hills through the heart of the Western Ghats before reaching the Arabian Sea. At Inchathotty, the river is at its most serene: wide, calm, and flanked by dense forest on both banks.
The Boothathankettu reservoir, just a few kilometres from Inchathotty, feeds this stretch of the river. The water here is deep in places — local knowledge is essential for boating and swimming — but in the right spots, it is one of the most peaceful river experiences in Kerala.
The hanging bridge crosses the Periyar at its most photogenic point. Standing on the bridge at dawn or dusk, with the mist rising off the water and the hills reflected in its surface, is one of those rare travel moments that stays with you long after you leave.
When to Visit
Inchathotty Through the Seasons
Monsoon
June – September
The forest comes fully alive. The Periyar swells, the hills turn an almost unreal green, and mist fills every valley. Note: leeches are active in this season and trekking requires a local guide. The river is too high for kayaking, but the atmosphere is unlike anything else in Kerala.
Post-Monsoon
October – November
The rains ease and the landscape is at peak lushness. Waterfalls flow strong, trails are passable, the river is ideal for kayaking, and the air carries that particular freshness that follows months of rain. The best balance of beauty and accessibility.
Winter
December – February
Clear skies, cool mornings, and perfect trekking conditions. The river is calm and ideal for kayaking and boating. Wildlife is more active and visible. This is the most popular season — the hanging bridge is at its most dramatic against the blue winter sky.
Summer
March – May
Warmer and quieter than winter. The forest is still beautiful, the river still flows, and you’ll often have the trails and the bridge almost entirely to yourself. Ideal for those who prefer fewer crowds and don’t mind the heat — the river provides natural relief.
